Collage, Circles, Cotton, and Cuddles

This week has gone by quickly. One highlight of the week was thrift shopping at the new Hospice Thrift Shop. I found all sorts of things for collage and assemblage work. This 4"x6" collage was made using my new finds from a couple of thrift shops: watercolour paper, brown paper bag, acrylic paint, paper from an art magazine, and a 4b pencil.

I continue to work in my Circle Journal (see Circle Journal at top of blog) which has surprised me and those who know me closely. It will be six months on June 1. Only six more months to go! I have noticed that each page opposite the other works well together, either by colour or topic. The longer I work on this the more possibilities I see. 2013 should be a good year for larger collage work!

May 12 & 13

The new Hospice Thrift Shop is bigger than the older one in another area of Nanaimo. It opened a few weeks ago and is STILL tidy, some might say Too tidy, but with more things coming in all the time I'm sure it will quickly become untidy!  I'll go back next week for another hunting session. Their prices are good and the staff are friendly. My kind of place!

25 cotton bags (4"x6") with draw strings for .25 each

The second highlight of the week was cuddling Arya for an hour while my daughter was at an appointment. Arya smiles and focuses on faces. She does cry, I know impossible to believe!

On Saturday I'll be posting my "Drawing Challenge: Shadows" hosted by the lovely Ariane of Rose .

I have thoroughly enjoyed being part of the Drawing Challenges and have met some wonderful women from all over the world through it. Please drop by on Saturday/Sunday to see some lovely and amazing work. Until then.

    1. Thank you Demie. I wasn't sure I could really stick with it but I've learned a lot through this commitment and hope to use some of it later in other art projects.
      Yes, she is!

  4. Hi Carole,
Thanks for commenting on my blog. Funny that paradise is never where one is: I long for thrift shops, you maybe for coconuts at your feet. But wherever we are: it is important to keep seeing the beauty in mundane things, dont you think? Oh and, what a cute granddaughter you have, lovely!
    Best,

  5. I love the collage you've posted here. It is delightfully playful and colorful.

I've just seen your Circle Journal for the first time and am amazed at your continued inventiveness. Awesome! How do you find so many incredible, different solutions? I agree that the twin pages all work together. Your project is a tour de force! Extremely impressive and intensely creative.

Your granddaughter is adorable. The way she is looking at you is so precious. She has such a thoughtful gaze. It seems like you've caught her mid sentence!

    1. Thank you Sharon. The ideas just come as I fiddle around with things.....although I have been woken up in the night with an idea or two!
Yes, she might turn out to be a real talker!

  6. Carole, I'm very looking forward to seeing what you show us for the 'shadow' theme. I love your work to bits. Well you know it says everything, when one has peanuts to work with and creates giant nut trees with those few peanuts. Such is the case with your work above. Gosh I love it. I know you are going to have a ball at the new thrift store. I am happy for you to have that delicious resource in your creative life. See you soon, *smiles* Norma
p.s. actually the metaphor sort of fell apart (often they do when one makes them up on the spot), as I think peanuts grow underground. Let's pretend they grow on giant trees okay?
p.p.s. Arya is awesome. I bet you two are fast friends!! :)

    1. Norma, I sat down today and did some shadow drawings and hated them all! Oh well, there's always tomorrow! Thank you for your kind and encouraging words. Peanuts can grow on trees for us! Ha!

  7. Hi Carole. I probably would have left the store with all those cotton bags. Then they would remain empty because I wouldn't be able to decide how to use them--they'd lay on top of my empty organization bins for years. Beautiful granddaughter; love the hat.

I love that you are still painting circles! I somehow forgot that you were planning to do this a whole year. You go girl!

Hope your arm is doing much better.

  13. Thanks Lisa. She has cheeks like her mom. Maybe painting Arya will be a pleasure, although it will have to be from photos as she squirms a lot!
My arm is feeling much better thanks.
