Drawing Challenge: playing cards

Confession: I didn't draw or paint or collage any playing cards this week but all the others who joined in Ariane's drawing challenge did.

Playing card games has always played a part in my life. I grew up in a family that played Old Maid, Gin, Crazy Eight, King's Corner, Solitaire, etc. My parents and my aunts and uncles hosted poker parties at their dinning room tables. We kids were allowed to eat some snacks and go to bed early so as not to bother their fun! As a kid I couldn't understand why we weren't invited and pouted while trying to fall asleep to their laughter and cheers.

When our girls were young we taught them Go Fish, Concentration, and all the other card games we'd grown up on. We've gone through many, many decks of cards over the years. Here are a few that are still in the game drawer. The Klimt ones are still in good condition as they have a special coating on them. I tried to educate the girls about artists any way I could!

Does anyone know what game these cards would have been used in? I picked them up off the floor of the recycling store years ago. They are well worn and dog eared but feel divine in the hands.

To see some gorgeously painted, printed, and drawn playing cards go the Ariane's blog. Enjoy!

  2. Oh, man, CArole - you really got lucky finding those unusual cards on the recycle store floor. Wish I knew what they were used for. Your memories of card games by the Adults rings true with me. My Adults were all avid card players, and we got sent to bed. Their game of choice was Bridge. My Danish grandfather was a cribbage ace. xxoo, sus

  5. Hi Carole, what an phantastic find! I can't say what they were for, nor how they where played, but it looks to me as part of MAX + Moritz Story from Wilhelm Busch an old german childrens book. Maybe you like to follow the link to amazon.de for further info

  6. Hi Carole - I'm a Klimt fan so the card caught my eye!

As to those cards you got at a recycle store , wow, they are quite old and unique. I am going to guess they might be for Old Maid, given they seem to be in sets of four. Are you going to tell us, or are you also wondering?

    You find the coolest stuff!
    Jenny

PS - the last link is incomplete - the first link is great so I went over to Ariane's for a look - cool, and in German too! (I like the practice)

  9. I haven't played any cards for a while. We took some on holiday but other games took over. I love those old cards-and also think they are for a game called Happy Families, though can't remember how to play it.

  11. I've never heard of the game Happy Families as Sue just stated above. We were huge card game players too...poker down to Go Fish. My two boys loved to play War too!

  13. How great to know what your 'find' is. It looks like it would have been a fun game. Reading this post reminded me of the Saturday evenings my parents dragged me off to the weekly poker party. (I'd forgotten). It was all well and good earlier in the evening where us kids (the host had children) would horse around the neighborhood playing hide 'n seek and kick the can, and then eat wieners and chips and play some more then come in when it got dark and then go to bed, telling stories and all sleeping in the same bed...but not so much fun being dragged out of bed past midnight and having to endure the ride home asleep (bumpy ride) in the back seat. I never play cards. But I sure like the art form. N. xo
